After two championship seasons filled with multiple feature wins and strong finishes on the Vermont-based tour in 2012 and 2013, Helliwell’s car owner Bruce Bernhardt has announced that the team will not attempt a three-peat on the American-Canadian Tour in 2014, nor will they attempt to compete for a championship in any touring series this upcoming season.

Instead, the Helliwell-Bernhardt duo and their No. 27nh team will run an “outlaw” type schedule. Bernhardt has already filed season registration forms with three Northeast touring series. The team plans to enter events with the American-Canadian Tour, Granite State Pro Stock Series, and Pro All Star Series.

Helliwell will use his championship Late Model for ACT events, while competing with a brand new Pro Stock/Super Late Model for GSPSS and PASS events.

“We’re looking to expand on things,” Helliwell said in a team press release. “We have no plans to stick with any one series this year. We have a new Pro Stock that is just about complete. We’ll be running all of the (Late Model and Pro Stock) traveling series at some point this year.”

The Dover, New Hampshire driver looked back on his two years running full-time on the American-Canadian Tour as a great success and looks at his plans for the 2014 season as his team’s next step.

“We’ve achieved more than we ever thought was possible with ACT,” Helliwell said. “We want to get away from running a full-time series for a few years. We built this Pro Stock chassis about a year ago and have just been waiting until the time is right to finish it. It’s just the next step for us.”

Car-owner Bruce Bernhardt was unsure of the exact schedule the team will run this upcoming season. Bernhardt and Helliwell plan to set-up their schedule on a monthly basis, while racing when and what best suits the team.

“It’s all unknown right now,” said Helliwell. “We have compiled all the schedules together and will choos as we go. I know there will be a lot of multi-race weekends. Plus, we would like to venture to Thompson (Speedway) some as well, with most of their shows being mid-week.”

Helliwell will kick-off the 2014 season during Ice Breaker weekend at Thompson Speedway on April 5 and 6. The team will compete with their new Pro Stock during the Granite State Pro Stock Series portion of the event, while also competing with their Late Model for the 25-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model feature.

The Bernhardt-led team will then travel to Lee USA Speedway for the Governor’s Cup 150, the season-opening event for the American-Canadian Tour.
