Dan Fredrickson will admit that he had no plans to go for a second ARCA Midwest Tour championship at the start of the 2013 season. But a third-place finish at the season opener at Madison (WI) International Speedway and back-to-back wins at State Park Speedway in Wausau, WI and Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells, WI were enough for him to race all season for the second title.
“I am really not one that likes racing for points, it honestly really doesn’t cross my mind,” Fredrickson said. “I like racing for the wins. I go all out in every race and I don’t like sitting back to just earn points.”
One example of this was back in 2008 when he was going after his first Midwest Tour championship. Fredrickson finished second to Jamie Iverson after the two had one of the most spirited battles on a short track. Fredrickson was not satisfied at finishing second in that event. In fact, he was mad. But, it was a big points day that led him to his first title.
Fast forward to 2013. It was the same Dan Fredrickson who was looking to win every time he showed up at the track. With two wins, nine top-five and 11 top-10 finishes in 12 starts, he won his second title by 50 points over Chris Wimmer.
What makes the second championship more satisfying is two-fold for Fredrickson.
“After the start we had the beginning of the season, we decided to go for a second championship and tie my racing hero Steve Carlson,” Fredickson said. “Growing up, I would sit in the stands and watch him race and to have the same number of Midwest Tour championships I thought it would be really cool to join him on the top of that list.
“Just competing in what I call the purest form of racing is awesome. When I was a kid, I thought it would be awesome to have a Super Late Model and race against these guys as a kid. It’s cool to be doing this now and being successful at it. I am hoping there are kids in the stands today that sees me and other drivers and wants to do the same.”
When asked what was his most favorite race this season, it was not one of his wins.
“I would say the Midwest Tour/CRA combined event at Madison back in August,” Fredrickson recalled. “I spun out on lap 25 and got a flat tire. We went into the pits and put on a new tire and restarted last and came through to finish third.
“Winning the race at State Park Speedway was pretty easy because I like racing on a slippery track and both times I have raced there, we have won. The win at Dells Raceway Park was the first time I won there. Chris Wimmer had a good lead with about 12 laps to go and we chased him down to get the win.”
Fredrickson isn’t set on his 2014 plans yet. He owns his own sign and graphics company. He's a father of four kids and has two crewmembers with newborns on the way. In fact, his younger brother David will soon be a first-time father to twins.
“I would really like to go to a few select shows and just have fun, but we will see,” Fredrickson said. “The Midwest Tour is the best tour around to race in and I will probably do some of those events and others. My family keeps me busy and they are first on the list.”
