After much success racing a Tour-Type Modified with the Valenti Modified Racing Series, 2012 VMRS champion Jon McKennedy decided to tackle a new challenge in 2013 running full-time in an ISMA Supermodified. McKennedy has plans to once again run a full-time ISMA schedule in 2014, but has additional plans to get back into a Tour-Type Modified racing the newly founded Tri-Track Open Series.
“I’m actually putting my old Modified back together,” McKennedy told Speed51.com. “It’s basically a brand new car that’s just been sitting here. It’s a nice piece. The car is currently getting put together right now. The first race with that will be up at Lee Speedway on Mother’s Day.”
In addition to the Mother’s Day Bullring Bash at Lee USA Speedway (NH), the Chelmsford, Massachusetts driver also plans to enter the SBM 125 at Star Speedway (NH) and Open Wheel Wednesday event at Seekonk Speedway (MA).
Dependent upon his success in the first three open events of the season, McKennedy also hopes to make an attempt at racing the September NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
“We’re going to run it in all the Tri Track Open Series races,” McKennedy said. “Depending on sponsorship and how we do in the first three races, we may race it at Loudon for the (NASCAR Whelen Modified) tour race in September.”
McKennedy’s last NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour start came at Riverhead Speedway (NY) on September 12, 2012. He has seven career top-10 finishes and a career best finish of seventh (twice).
The 26-year-old Modified veteran will begin his 2014 season on May 4 at Oswego Speedway (NY) with the International Supermodified Association.
