The United Northern Drivers Racing Association (TUNDRA) will head to Wisconsin International Raceway near Kaukauna, Wisconsin this Saturday for Round One of their eight-round 2014 schedule. Close to 40 Super Late Models hope to make the field for the 50-lap feature event.
This will be the fourth season for the TUNDRA Super Late Models Powered by Wisconsin Potatoes. The series started in 2011 when there was interest to bring back Super Late Model racing to Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells, WI. From the meeting, the group agreed to come up with a new joint venture where the drivers would pool their funds for a “buy-in” that help covered the various expenses. In exchange, the track offered an allotment of pit passes per team; two sponsor VIP tickets per event and a gate contingency based on fan count.
In 2012, the series grew averaging 31 cars per event and only did five events at Dells Raceway Park.
After that season, officials decided to make the series a full traveling series with adding events at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, Jefferson Speedway, and Slinger Super Speedway for their 2013 season. Their final event of the season at Slinger Super Speedway in Slinger, Wisconsin had 41 cars.
This year, they have an eight-round schedule at eight different tracks. Their first race at WIR this Saturday will be their first visit to the half-mile, “D” shaped oval.
“Our hope for the season is to continue to give racers an affordable, fun, and competitive atmosphere,” Matt Panure, TUNDRA PR Director said. “We also want to give fans an event they’ll want to experience again.”
